The Palm House in the garden of the castle Schoenbrunn was erected in 1881/2 to designs by Franz Xaver Segenschmid. One hundred and thirteen metres long, the Palm House consists of a 28-metre high central pavilion and two lateral pavilions which are three metres lower. Linked by tunnel-like passages, the pavilions contain different climatic zones: a 'cold' house to the north, a temperate zone in the central pavilion and a tropical climate in the south pavilion. The necessary temperatures are achieved by means of a steam heating system which means that rare specimens from all over the world can be grown here. This impressive iron construction used the most modern technology of its time, with the materials determining its form. The proportions of the convex and concave lines of the central and lateral pavilions are perfectly balanced and endow the iron structure with a perceptible lightness despite its massive dimensions. Inserted into the framework of the external iron construction, the glazing clings to the curved iron girders like a skin. The Schönbrunn Palm House was the last of its type to be constructed in continental Europe.

Sabine dear,
The buildings and the garden are so elegant and exquisite. One can almost imagine Keiser Franz Joseph walking on the grounds there surrounded by his court.
Faved and 10/10 in VB as soon as I see it.

I find this the best posting of the day and have downloaded it to my Austria folder. If i get it in the votingboot it will get a fat 10 of cource. Composition is great, and so is the ballance in nature colors to be topped of by a blue sky. The bush on the left gives the image dept, and the nice brunn behind it.. Well what to say about the architecture.. the do not build like this anymore. what a sight. The amount of work in the garden must be amazing, i just wonder how many people work there to keep it in this crips condition ! Furthermore, you managed to get the shot without any people. Well that is not a easy task at Schönbrunn ! Super image, and now i am absolutly sure that i want to see that garden with my own eyes.

I like the subject. And good lighting. I would have liked to see more of the foreground, so instead of 1/2 sky and 1/2 earth, make it more 1/3 sky 2/3 earth. In other words the frame adjusted or the pic shot with a longer focus and angled a bit lower to catch more of the building and retain the grounds.

I think I might have seen a picture of these amazing greenhouses before Sabine! A very good capture of their vast structure set against the pretty garden in the foreground!
