Allow me to be the first to comment on this fantastic photo! I am honored. (hehe) Great work with this one! You captured the burst perfectly! And the faded, simple lights in the background compliment the firework greatly. Not your normal fireworks shot. You grabbed the burst perfectly and the background isn't just plain black but doesn't take away from the focus of the photo. (I could ramble on and on about this one!) Amazing job! This is my all time favorite of yours! In fact, going into my favorites!

The thing I like absolutley the most about this shot is the orange in the center. It goes from hot white and fades out to cool blue and finally life-less black. I've tried and failed at fireworks pictures, so way to go!...it ain't easy. As for a possible improvement, if there were more lights on the buildings, it might give them more dimension and help give a scale or depth to the image. Definetly one of the best you've posted so far :)

Excellent capture of fireworks. I am envious as I have yet to capture anything that resembles a fireworks although it looks like one to my eyes? lol Kudos to you for a job well done. Thanks for sharing this with me ;=)

I saw your request for comment and can only say, that I can not image a better way to take a photo of a firework. It is clear, even it is a night shot, and in case anybody would ever get bored by looking at the firework, we still have a beautiful skyline to look at.

OK - I saw your request (Jan 07) and came here.
Firstly your capture of the burst is excellent - technically wonderfully caught. The only thing is (for me) that there's nothing else to keep my eyes up there, so I quickly come to the horizon and spend some time there, trying to puzzle my way through the buildings etc. Not fair, I know, but I didn't find anything taking my eyes up again to enjoy the firework. Perhaps an overlay of another burst or smaller ones would keep one's concentration in the sky area and might have helped put it into the permanent gallery? Hope this helps a bit. Kate

I agree .. you need more .. more bursts, more foreground\background elements

we aren't primitive natives, we've seen fireworks before .. :o) .. so, you still need to employ all the photography "gimmicks" that you would ordinarily think about .. ie .. you need to make it a photo worth looking at .. and part of that will be LUCK (ie, you can't control what kind of burst it will be) ... so you need to do the legwork and shoot from a location that gives you a proper setting .. (when possible)

back in the mid 80's I shot the Bay Bridge 50th birthday (San Francisco Bay) .. I had the lit bridge in the background, planes flying overhead (dot dot dash) .. and I had little coast guard boats zipping around harassing the sailboats ... fireworks were shot from three barges .. so the display was significantly wider than your average event

granted .. I didn't "plan" for these, and pick my location for them .. but they all came together to bolster the shoot

my first comments weren't of a technical nature, and thus, not very helpful. sorry, i was simply reacting to a great image. the 'burst' itself is top-notch, but the frame as a whole has a huge 'space for rent' sign on it. try cropping up 1/5th to the upper line of lights, and in. also, raising the gamma levels a notch or two might 'fill in' the black void of the night. normally, such a contrast would be optimal, but only if there were more fillers such as other fireworks, buildings,or whatever. hope this helps... dude;-) by the way, that was just a friendly gesture..not meant to be demeaning...

Coming from your request, and only having minimal experience with shooting fireworks (once), I'd have to say you've done a really good job on capturing the colors in this burst. Since you've left so much of the urban skyline in the photo, I might suggest either lightening the picture to actually show the buildings or go for a longer exposure to show the buildings and perhaps a few more bursts. You're placement and cropping of the burst really couldn't be much better.
