I wonder if this was a school house at one time, with all the windows etc. I LOVE the fence in the foreground...it gives such quiet touch..and the shade of the tree brings out the silence too. This is just lovely...

The beer urges me on, the bewitching beer, which sets even a wise man to singing and to laughing gently and rouses him up to dance and brings forth words which were better unspoken. Homer, The Odyssey (note: beer substituted for wine)

I doubt this was a school house as it was the only building for miles around. Somewhere in Oregon or Idaho stands a lone house, alone and solem, amongst the sage and hills.
Thanks for posting!

You are never so alone as when you are ill on stage. The most nightmarish feeling in the world is suddenly to feel like throwing up in front of four thousand people.--Judy Garland

Looks a bit like an old school even when there isn't a house in the area.
Well never mind it a nice shot and even when it looks a bit spooky I like the place.

hehe I'd give someone 20 bucks to spend a night in that place. I doubt they
would. This is an amazing yet spooky pic. ;)

Lovely shot. This image I am sure has a lot of memories to tell. Good shot, love the tree that overshadows this place too. Great capture. Nice picture.

The lightness of the building compared to the rich color of the tree give the structure a bit of a ghostly appearance. The mint color of the grasses is pretty also. I don't know if there are ghosts in there but if so they are crowded unless there is more to that building than can be seen. This has a crisp early morning atmosphere about it. It's about time for the ghosts to get moving around. I'm gone. Great capture.

In rural areas, small, square structures like this, with multiple windows, certainly were schoolhouses. Before the advent of modern school consolidation with multiple town's students attending a school in a single selected town, these schoolhouse were located in townships in nearly all western states. They were created from a single standardized plan that was adjusted over phases. The one shown here was probably the second phase. The roof has a small dormer on the side facing the viewer and a cupola on the opposite side, most likely over the door. The first phase was simply a square box with a plain hip roof, a door on one side and a row of windows on the opposite wall. The third phase, the first step in consolidation, was a larger schoolhouse, with either a clapboard or brick exterior. There were two floors and a basement, the main and second floor containing four classrooms. Not as many of these were built as were the first and second phases. Over the course of a year, these buildings served as schoolrooms, voting precinct places, township meeting halls, or simply places for folks to gather. A number of years ago, repair work was done on the massive front steps of the North Dakota state capitol building. A storage room under the steps was opened and cleaned out in the process, and original plans for the first of these rural schoolhouses was discovered. It was a common practice for western states to provide each other with these types of plans -- a good-neighbor policy sort of thing.
