This is a flower that opens up from the purple coloured pod. It grows on a type of palm tree that we get here in South Africa ;) All comments welcome!

It is a Traveler's Palm. My parents have a couple in their back yard.

Very impressive and interesting, unusual for us, we haven't got palm trees, unfortunately, I love them very mach.

The bird of paradise is a much smaller plant and doesn't grow in a fan shape like the traveler palm.

Yes I think "Piner" is right, but the flower does resemble "the bird of paradise" flower a lot :)

It sure looks like a Traveler's Palm and a Bird of paradise. Either way it sure is a cool and interesting looking plant! I love the vibrant red!
