I've been helping a friend of mine for the past week or so clear some trees from around a cottage on a popular local lake. Taking a break from the heat of the day, the owner of the cottage was kind enough to take us on a tour of the lake.

We came across these fine canoeists about half-way through our tour. One of the few other watercraft on the lake that beautiful warmish late summer's day. So being the only person armed with a camera; my shipmates having only muskets and cutlasses and an odd eyepatch or two, I'm pretty sure there were no parrots involved, but in the heat of battle some things are mis-remembered, we prepared to board the craft...; I took a small series of shots as the crafty canoeists made their getaway.

Wasn't too sure which one to post. This closeup, the "oh, that looks like a canoe out there" distance photo, or the "that is definitely a canoe and it's a nice distance away" middle ground version. I might just post the other versions and let them fight it out themselves. I did a little cropping to remove most of the cottage in the background. I would have preferred a pristine wilderness background, but it is sadly lacking around this lake. And I don't think it would be proper boating etiquette to follow them around the lake until the perfect backdrop was found.

Hope you enjoy and your comments welcomed. Have a rather great day

Such nice, vivid colors to this image and the little ripple to the water. Feels like a person could reach out and touch the water right through your shot. Terrific image.

Hey, Wendell....

It's a good thing you didn't try to board their craft. These are definitely pirates of the 1st magnitude. You can tell because the 80-year-old is in the stern. Also you have to remember that a canoe paddle oftentimes is the sheath for a sword; so you have to be extra careful with a motley crew like this.

I was a canoe instructor in Wisconsin many years ago; so I know boating etiquette. Best not to follow them too closely.

Looks like you picked a great day for a canoe ride. That water doesn't have a single ripple in it. Beautiful conditions for the great reflections in your shot. Wonderful title and an excellent narrative. "Great shot" as far as I'm concerned.

Glad to see you remembered your manners and didn't start stalking these nice ladies Wendell. The autumnal colours are really lovely, but, whoever painted that bench wants shooting!

Ah yes that one in the stern definitely has a dangerous stance about her! It's a very good shot Wendell - perfect for the weekend.

I say let them battle it out!! Its more fun that way. The water is so calm here! I bet this place will look even better when the leaves change color. A great image!
