Drying Out

I ran across this butterfly earlier today. It was doing its best to dry out its wings after a night of light rain laying low in the bushes. Too bad I spotted the tiny movements it made. So I got down nice and low on the ground to take some photos. I proceeded to meticulously remove blades of grass, plant stems and old blackberry vines from my line of sight trying not to disturb the butterfly in the process. Shooting involved holding the camera at odd angles while fending off hungry mosquitoes. Several hundred shots and two wet, grass-stained knees later I crawled away covered in ants. Next time I'll be sure to check the ground I'll be laying on before crawling around.

Enjoy and your comments welcomed.

Well worth all that effort Wendell:):) I love butterflies as they are just about the most beautiful creatures on earth. Thanks for sacrificing comfort for our viewing pleasure buddy. This one is so gorgeous. Nice angle and good use of the available lighting.

To hell with the obstacles, Wendell. There isn't any shot you wouldn't try with that adventuresome spirit. I am glad you fought the elements and got the photo. One good shot out of 200 is good.

A captivating colored butterfly. Excellent details and perspective. Enjoyed hearing the lengths necessary to get this angle! Thank you for sharing it.

I really like this one, Wendell. We don't see many tiger swallowtails in these parts. You've done an admirable job of capturing this one. You're making it very tough on me. I don't immediately see anything to critique. The colors and textures are magnificent. The focus is perfect especially considering that you were battling mosquitoes and ants. The DOF could have been a millimeter broader, but this is one of the best postings I've seen in a few days here on Caedes.

Wendell - A few mosquitos, ants and wet knees is a small price for this color and lighting. Kudos! Thad
