I found this critter crawling on this plant. Which I am told on good authority is a hydrangea; the plant not the bug. I have no idea what the bug is outside of being a member of the beetles. Not to be mistaken as a member of the Beatles.

Shot this and several hundred other photos earlier today trying to get some macro shots of some ants also found crawling on the same bush. Apparently you have to either glue the ants in place or drug them into a stupor to get them to stand still long enough to get a half-decent shot. I could have bribed them with some sweet nectar. But besides being highly unethical, just where am I going to score some nectar at this time of year? The bees pretty much have the market cornered and I didn't feel like setting up a sting operation. So instead I settled on taking some shots of this rather sedate beetle that was out working on it's tan in the afternoon sun.

Enjoy and your comments welcomed.

Wendell - It looks like the bug is positioning itself in the sun to work on its tan. Some good macro work here. Thad

Good good shot...could use a crop..just a bit...so that the beadle is more in the "picture"...but it has a good DOF and lighting.

Well done :o)

Great macro! And a really good shot of a bug butt basking in the sun. Hey! There could be a song in there somewhere. Nice job :)

Bug butt basking in the sun,
Bug butt basking in the sun,
Ain't gonna see him run,
Cause he's having too much fun,
Basking his butt in the sun.

Yep, there is one.

Emptiness is not nothingness. It is simply the opposite of full of it.

I believe that is suicide ledge Wendell. I have heard about it but never seen it. According to legend, beetles from all over the world come there to end it all. Great last portrait. Did you give him last rites?
