Now whether this is a cute coot is an argument up for depart. One I'm sure ornithologists will be debating for many minutes until they get distracted by a gavia immer making some noise three lakes over.

I happened upon this feathered fellow doing his best to mingle with the mallards down at the duck pond. As you can see they were having nothing to do with him. I can kind of empathize with him.

Enjoy and your comments welcomed.

I had no idea there were any coots outside of Atascadero Lake where there are at least a few hundred. They are very territorial, and I love when they hunker down and try to charge another coot that is silly enough to get too close to their area of the lake.

This is a pretty successful nature shot, Wendell. More sharply focused than anything I've tried to photograph. Maybe I'll head down to the lake and shoot a cute coot. Nice job with the composition. The background is a little distracting, but there's not much you can do about that. Ya gotta love those red eyes.

I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

The Old Coot, the duck not Skitzo, must have taken the Red Eye flight from Atascadero Lake, Wendell. You must think I am looney if you think I am going to buy the story about the gravy innards three lakes over.
Good focus on the duck.
The background is kinda like meeting a car with its bright lights on Wendell. After you get focused, it is all right.
Good work.

Wendell - Those red eyes, a trademark of the coot, pop in this image. I like the mirror effect on the lake, also. Thad

The background is distracting when you first look at the picture, and after that, it is part of what makes the image really interesting. I've always liked coots, young and old. Good shot.

Not familiar with coots but they look like a red-eyed version of a duck - the background seems at first distracting but in the end works well as Tom said -

Very nice, Wendell. If you have a DOF tool, it would work nicely in taking the above water shore growth more out of focus, but leaving the reflections as is.

I like the subject, but I had a hard time focusing on parts of it. The coloring was great and the ripple to the water was interesting.
