The tree sculpture is called Friends of the Forest or at least that's what the plaque reads. And I'm thinking that with friends like these the trees might want to consider finding new friends. What kind of friend goes around carving huge chunks off of you and then invites parasites to live in the open wounds? Apparently the ones that carry around chainsaws and chisels.

One of the dozen or so tree carvings that used to be found around town. The trees were all victims of dutch elm disease and a good many more were cut down. Since then some of the sculptures have succumbed to rot and a few were vandalized and removed. I think only 3 or 4 of them remain.

Enjoy and your comments welcomed.

I'm not sure about the neighborhood, but I just might be frightened if the street is dark at night when I come across this. Talented chainsaw carving.

At least it doesn't have to worry about the Emerald Ash Borer any more...I don't think they go for trees like this! Without any bark, it may have to worry about catching cold, though. Beautiful HDR work, Wendell. Very cool looking shot.

Looks like the guy stayed up till tree thirty finishing this baby, Wendell. I wonder if he had a silencer on the chainsaw.
Good background you captured.

A great way to try and safe a bit of the tree and too bad so many are gone now. Wonderful detail and colours, your description at the start made me chuckle

I think the idea of at least saving some of the tree for artistic purposes is a great one Wendell - this is very interesting.

Someone is very clever at carving Wendell. Wood in any form seems to have a beauty of its own.

Lol your so cynical you crack me up,I am looking at this capture think that amazing and how nice for Wendell to share this lovely looking piece of tree carving and for me rare scene too.Plus the young children would be mesmerised by it then we read your comment and know being a nature lover feel real bad ,that poor tree lol.I still love this capture and the detail is nice and sharp espcicaly in the tree and I love the sky as well it so dramatic looking it cold have been the heavens sending you a thunder bolt lol.
