Another view of the Oliveira (olive)Square now with the Padrão dos Salados and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. The olive tree legend says that a olive tree was planted on the square so that it would provide olive oil to the altar of the church of N. Sra. da Oliveira (situated in front of the olive tree). Back then olive oil was used as candles are used nowadays – to maintain a burning flame by the altar. But the olive tree started to die. Merchant Pedro Soares offered a cross to Padrão dos Salados and ever since the cross was placed there the olive tree didn’t die and grew. Nowadays there is still an olive tree by the church and the Padrão dos Salados, but it isn’t the one on the legend, as the actual tree was planted in 1985. Guimarães - Portugal

beautiful old architecture Manuel! Is that your wife looking at you while you take the photograph? this reminds me so much of some of the places I see when I am in Spain, especially a village called Peniscola which is a very old fishing village, very hilly, but has lot of little cafes outside old buildings such as this one! well done on capturing the atmosphere and wonderful architecture!
