The prairie dogs (Cynomys) are small, burrowing rodents native to the grasslands of North America. On average, these stout-bodied rodents will grow to be between 12 and 16 inches (30 and 40 cm) long, including the short tail. The highly social prairie dogs live in large colonies or "towns" – collections of prairie dog families that can span hundreds of acres. Families usually consist of 1 male and 2 to 4 females living in a strict social hierarchy. All comments are welcome! Enjoy

Good shot Gabi. I saved it for my grandson in his Critters file. That is a compliment. They do multiply quite frequently. South Dakota is one place people go to see how many of these they can shoot. The set up with tripods and scopes and it becomes a vitual shooting gallery. It is not something I do but landowners find them to be a nuisance. Your post is quite good. I didn't mean to take away from it, it just reminded me.

I love to see these when we go to Chester Zoo. We love the way they have spread out from their proper enclosure to all the surrounding ones by burrowing underneath the walls. This is a gorgeous image. Faved!

Oh my!! Naughty little critters eating all those garden vegies!!
I wondered if the ones here were going to get my garden goodies, but they didn't! Whew. I love this little photo. I agree, I don't like rats, yet these are the same as chipmunks right? so why do we like them?! They are cute I guess. But I like the way you caught them in this sharp photo. Very nice..V
