Detail of the Rosetta Stone (the inscription that allowed the decipherment of ancient Egyptian). The upper 3 rows are in traditional Egyptian hieroglyphs while the lower section is in demotic (a kind of short-hand hieroglyphs).
The Rosetta stone is Aswan granite which is usually a pinky colour but the French, before they handed it over to the English, coated the thing in ink to make "copies" of it so they could use them for decipherment. The black colour is the colour of today's stone as the British Museum decided not to clean it as it captures a moment in history. I made the black a little stronger to avoid too much speckle in the shot.
