I woke this guy up at Lettuce Lake Park back in May 2016. We're getting the outer bands of Hurricane Hermine. We're fine, it's not what you see in hurricane footage with the bending palms, etc. One of the bands just passed though about 30 minutes ago, and there was a little wind and rain, but pretty mild like most of the tropical storms I've been through. Flooding is the main concern, and although we're near the river, I don't see us getting wet. The radar image of our area looks much worse than what is going on. Side note: We watched one of our resident gators in the lake behind our apartment eat a big catfish earlier. :) Should have taken a photo.

If I may be bold..

You and your camera did pretty well with the challenging lighting conditions, Alex.

Not that one can necessarily plan to capture an alligator during the 'golden hours of photography'.. however, forging ahead.. shooting outside the midday light and hours would probably make your photography life a lil' bit easier. The light is not as harsh, simply put, and easier on your camera's sensors.

What caught my eye.. is your composition of your image here (aside from the subject matter).

I hope you don't mind and although the changes are somewhat subtle and nuanced.. have a look see:

"Peek a boo" - Cropped

Now the alligator's eye is directly on the intersection of the two lines, according to the compositional 'rule of thirds'.

... ...

Oh, and additionally.. on the notes of editing.. I copied the background layer (in Photoshop) and converted it to Black and White.. then, changed the Blending Mode to that of Luminosity to dial back some of the 'neon greenness'.

That stuff aside..

Envy you for these photographic opportunities.

Not so envious, though, on the possibility of facing one of these guys face to face.

;o)

And, but of course.. thanks for sharing this one with us.

Oh yeah Alex you do have very cool "neighbors" - this guy's a beauty - love those gators - it sounds as though Hermine passed through your area without too much damage - Great Capture!!!!!

You woke this guy up!! Not the way to get on his good side. lol Glad you escaped.

Good take on this critter, and Les' re-work improves the image, too.

Alex, the curve of its mouth gives it the deceiving and misleading impression that it's smiling, but think it's in reality a devil in disguise.

Think I would have gotten a heart attack when such a critter have approached me that near. You're a brave man, my friend.
Thanks for this unique capture!

That eye really grabbed my attention, and I think he is smiling because he is thinking of his next meal.

Nicely spotted by both of you, Alex. Glad to hear you're weathering the storm without much issues. The worst storm i've ever been through was in Tampa.
