This was an experiment with the shutter priority feature. More luck than judgement, which is all I needed in this picture, except it would have been better if the luck was placed on the the winning horse. Oh well, maybe next time. I didn't mind that the front horse had lost his head out of the frame as the other horses head plants itself squarely in the middle of the frame, so you don't have to guess.

I have made similar attempts with shutter priority and so far i haven't had as much success. Either i get the exposure wrong or the critter in question is out of focus. I think your experiment was partially successfull you have a good exposure and managed to freeze the action. Its a shame about the first horse not being in frame but hey no body's perfect.

I might add that it was the posture of the green jockey that I thought really gave the shot the speed, crouched down low over his mount.

Run Seabiscuit, Run. LOL. What a great action shot. You did well to get this in such great focus. Beautiful piece of photography.

I think this is outstanding and I agree...the shot is about the jockeys. The jockey on the leading horse (AND his horse) both know they are going to win... the jockey is crouched very low to eliminate wind resistance and is not using the stick...both of his hands are on the reins and pulling back, which I think is to help the horse maintain balance and speed by letting him lean into the bit. The jockey and (especially) the horse in second place know the race is over...the horses' attention is on the jockey, not on the horse ahead.

Well, at least we have one horse with a head. But we have the both guys, that's good.

Well John I think you did a marvelous job on this action. He wins by a half of link, lol. Fabulously done and love it, of course I love horses.

Excellent capture of the action, The only thing that would have been better is to have a whole shot of the horse in the lead. But this would not have been easy to do I;m sure. So well focused, sharp and clear. ♪ ♫ :)sandi♪ =^..^=

You really caught the sense of the race in this. I like the way it's cropped in close and you haven't tried to get all of the horses in; and including the timer at the back is a masterstroke.
