Here's something you don't see every day in a Whitehorse surface parking lot: a snowman with a message - to feed his kids using traditional methods.

Perhaps a little removed from the normal tucker we're presented in neat plastic wrap at Safeway, south of the 60th.

But for communities that hunt in Arctic waters, where supply boats arrive semi-annually (ice willing), hamburger just isn't on the menu and local 'proteins' are a practicality of survival.

This image was from my trip to Whitehorse in Yukon Territory last week. The city was host to the 2011 Air Canada International Snow carving competion.

The unfortunate Walrus was a gutsy entry from Team Ontario.

I used B&W (symbolic of the way this way of life polarizes opinions), and added a tint of Red for dramatic effect.

And it allows you to appreciate the skill needed to carve these facinating snow sculptures.

It is good presented in black/white John. The theme of the snow sculpture is really good and the work even better. Nice informative post. Great entry for journalistic photography category---if we had one.

That thing is pretty good size, from looking at one of the pictures in the link you provided. The red tint makes it look like blood lying there. Fantastic shot, John.

Very nicely done John. Nice contrasts in the photo and a great b/w presentation with the splash of colour representing the blood and viscera.
