Here is my first attempt at this type of transformation. Its hard trying to do this when you give the picture a sort of "Orton Effect" before the select and fill. So I had to do some touching up around the edges. Next time I will try it the other way, but even still I'm happy with this, and thankful to my friend; Alexxandra, for her tips. Of course, I had to throw in some of my own tricks out of the bag. ;)
ps. It's some kind of Daisy with a natural burnt color, pretty weird. The colors remind me of a Scorpion, plus I have the song "Scorpion Flower" by Moonspell on replay in my head! Don't you hate that sometimes? HAH!

'Purcoincidence' and serendipity? Not sure, we shall find out.

That is to say, I was logged off ... then, decided to do a bit more browsing of the new images gallery ... and saw your image here.

That said, here's a variation of Ortonizing (vid tutorial for PS, not that long and quite good in my mind ... straightforward with screenshots, should be able to extrapolate if you use another image editing program) that gives you a bit more control. And with the masking involved, perhaps this might provide an assist in the 'select and fill' that you make mention of in your narrative.

Good composition. And I do like the desaturated background, as it does serve to highlight the bloom.

Caveats?

Well, straight to the point, hope you don't mind ... things appear a little muddied as you move away from the central portion of the bloom. Loss of detail is more apparent on the outer lying portions of the flower's petals.

Think if you could correct for that ... it would easily elevate your image from good to very good, if not excellent.

Trying new stuff, though? Priceless and I applaud your efforts in the editing chair.

And being bold again, think this one is deserving of a revisit. Just some thoughts and of course, my humble opinion.

Allllll that said ... thanks for sharing your talents and efforts. You do some very nice work behind the lens and in the chair. :o)

Hmmm. Les is a hard act to follow. Honestly, I like the detail in the center of the flower and the great orange colors. Eye catching.
