This gentleman is a private shrimper in the Gulf. We came across him in Gulfport and struck up a conversation. With diesel prices and other costs of keeping his nets in the water as well as imported shrimp he is struggling to make a living like so many other private fisherman are in that area. This would explain the amount of shrimp boats for sale that we saw in the harbor. This gentleman now sells fresh bait to sport fishermen from his boat attempting to care for his wife and three children . He ended our conversation by saying " The private fishermen are in trouble in the United States and no one seems to care ... shrimping is our life ."

What a sad commentary of the state of affairs of our citizens Jen-Nay. People who have made their livings for generations being threatened.
I think it is time we return to American made for our country.
I was stationed in the Biloxi-Gulfport area when I was in the service. I need to go back and see how it has changed.
Good photo.

People are like cameras--sometimes they lose focus.

If you think you've got things bad in the States Marsha petrol in the UK is over £1.48 per litre, and diesel is even more expensive! it seems neither government cares. Nice photo it's good to see people on Caedes.

It's happening all over Marsha!...It is only those in government that seem not to care!...Like over here...they cut the pensions of those that can ill afford it...to feed the glut of the well off!...

I hope this chap can survive for the love of his family!..

Sad but similar things are happening everywhere Marsha. The large fishing boats are illegally sweeping the oceans clean of fish. Hope this man will get along somehow and be able to provide for his family.

It's a shame to see that guy... having to sell shrimp as bait instead of selling to seafood buyers. It's cheaper to buy shrimp from China or Viet Nam. I've even seen frozen shrimp with Cajun looking labels like 'Boudreaux's Shrimp' only to find in fine print at the bottom, product of china. Blame it on money.

Interesting comments and nice shot. For so many people, the Great Recession hasn't gone anywhere. Energy costs are helping to keep it that way.

That seems to be the story everywhere. There are salmon boats for sale here too. Its a very hard living! Great image and narrative to go with it!
