The Shoe Tree is one of the oldest traditions at Murray State University , Murray KY. Legend has it couples who met at Murray State and marry return and each nails a shoe to the tree. Some write their wedding dates on the shoes. Many return and attach baby shoes when they start their families. The tree is in terrible shape , it's dead . However it remains and the Tradition lives on at Murray State.

A good tradition Marsha. Here there is a bridge over a canal where couples write their names on a pad lock and lock the padlock along the railing then throw the key away. It is supposed to symbolize that they will be together for ever :) Nice interesting image.

I'd heard about the padlocks. Seems like it was in the news because some people were sawing off the padlocks and taking them ... for the metal I guess? The shoe tree is something I've never heard of. Sounds very unique. Good shot of this phenomena!

Speaking of shoes, one other thing I've always puzzled over is the pairs of shoes tied together and thrown over utility lines. Who is doing this and why?

Around here if it doesn't work out the stronger of the two spouses locks the other to the tree (shoes and all) and throws away the key. I guess it is the best of both traditions.
You find the most unique things to photograph Jen-Nay . Is that your flip flop I see?

Wow! Quite a pile of foot gear. Some have evidently grown overripe and dropped to the ground. Very curious and colorful.
