The Potawatomi Native Americans were the early settlers of what is known today as The Kankakee River basin . They called it " Ti-yar-ac-ke " meaning " Wonderful Land." In an on going battle with The Iroquois Tribe from the east they used the marsh as a refuge . Today the 133 mile long river is quite popular for canoeing , fishing , hunting and bird watching. The 4,000 acre Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area located in Indiana consist of riparian woodlands, marsh , wetlands and farm land. It is home to a wide variety of birds, including The Bald Eagle, Hawks , Wild Turkey's , Cranes ,Ospreys, Ducks and Geese. As well as a large population of other wildlife including Deer, Beavers, Otters, Bobcats , Coyotes and Fox.
