Nottoway Plantation located in Louisiana was completed in 1859 for an estimated cost of $80,000 . It was the home of John H. Randolph his wife Emily and their eleven children . Nottoway with it's hand carved marble mantles and intricate plaster frieze work is a 53,000 square foot,64 room three story mansion often referred to as an American Castle . The Plantation originally sat on 620 acres of swamp and 400 acres of highland. During the Civil War the grounds of Nottoway were occupied by both Confederate and Union Troops. The Plantation several times came under heavy fire by Union gunboats. Nottoway survived the Civil War and today is a museum filled with history about the Randolph Family. The mansion also serves as an inn and a restaurant and is a popular place for weddings , receptions and other special events. Nottoway Plantation is also the final resting place for John and Emily Randolph.

A very well chosen composition, Marsha. Although this is a great mansion, an image of only a mansion may have caused that it would have been somewhat boring. The natural framing prevents this in a very good way. Gives the static mansion even a somewhat dynamic outlook. Well done!

Regards, Cornelius.

A lovely mansion with a history behind it. I bet the 11 children had enough space to play inside as well as outside :)

I'm happy that they saved the older homes like these for us to enjoy. I enjoy taking tours through them. Great shot. Great angle on the leaning tree.
