The Cardinal is Indiana's State Bird . Ball State University in Muncie Indiana adopted the Cardinal as their mascot in 1927 . They named him Charlie . Since I have some family members from Ball State , I rarely see a Cardinal that I don't think of Charlie Cardinal . Originally Ball State was nicknamed the "Hooserions," discontent led to a school newspaper-sponsored contest to find a new nickname. When no acceptable choices came, a committee was formed, and it was a member of this committee, Professor Paul Billy Williams, who came up with the new nickname of Cardinals. He came up with it while talking to Coach Norman G. Wann, another committee member, about how the logo of his favorite team, the Saint Louis Cardinals looked distinctive on the jersey of Rogers Hornsby . Yes, that would be Tick's ,Saint Louis Cardinals .

Tick's Saint Louis Cardinals thank you Jen-Nay. They are the most beautiful bird alive. No dead bird looks good.
Judging from the blue in its mouth, it must be finishing off a Chicago Cub. :)
Cool shot.

I have to accept Tick's dig since that "team" has been so bad for sooo long! Excellent macro Marsha - perfect red color.

Hard to believe this Cardinal is 87 Year old. Well with all the Food there I can see how he lived that long. LOL

Agree with Tick, Cardinals (males) are indeed one of the most beautiful birds alive. thanks for sharing Charlie with everyone.

Magnificent shot, he's beautiful.

My grandfather was a Professor of Chemistry at Ball State in Muncie and my momma was a graduate of Ball State & was born in Muncie. Small world isn't it, it's great hearing someone talk about Ball State.

These birds are so brightly colored with red that they easily gain your attention. The head feathers are so distinctive. You captured this one with his head feathers standing straight up. That is very nice. Sometimes their head feathers are almost completely back against there head. The black around the face is very notable as well. It makes them look like they are wearing a hooded mask. A good side profile capture Marsha. I really like photographing these birds and they are just now starting to show up around here.

Marsha, thanks for both a fine image and an interesting narrative. As Bob already has said, on the other side of the big pond we don't have cardinals (birds, lol), and that's a pity because it are beautiful birds.

Regards, Cornelius.

Wonderful shot of a beautiful bird and also thanks for the info Marsha. No wonder they were unhappy with a name like Hooserions (sounds like hooligans). Here we don't see any cardinals. The only cardinal I know is that of the compass.:)
