Actually this is Fireweed and the nickname comes from Alaska. This plant is in the Newberry Caldera in Oregon right on the edge of the Paulina Falls. It's called a "calendar" because when the very top flowers open up means there is six-weeks until the first snowfall, or major weather change. It is surprisingly accurate. Please enjoy and many thanks in advance for any and all comments.

Hello, Bob....

I checked out your gallery and saw some excellent photos. This one is very good as well. However, I am horrible at shooting flowers; so I'm not sure this critique is worthwhile.

Here's what I think: Very good overall composition, good dark background gives some "pop" to the flowers, very pleasing colors, good overall focus and clarity. Technically you've got a good photo. On a 1 to 10; I'd give it a 6.5. If I was a flower fan, I'd give the photo a 7. Compared to the comments above, I'm quite verbose.

Nice composition and DOF in your photo. Nice colours and lighting on the fireweed. An informative narrative, I had no idea you could predict the weather with these plants. Good job and thanks for sharing.

Think about the photo before and after, never during. The secret is to take your time. You mustn't go too fast. The subject must forget about you. Then, however, you must be very quick. Henri Cartier-Bresson
