The Kea (Nestor notabilis), an unusual Parrot species native to alpine forested areas of New Zealand's South Island, often called Clowns of The Mountains. They are approx 18" in length and weigh 1000g. It is thought that some may live to be 50 years old. This one I spotted in the Arthurs Pass area, and he would have had my camera off me given half a chance. They are notorious for their mischief and curiosity often stripping unattended cars of their trimmings, and stealing clothing and other small items. They gained partial protection in 1970 and full protection in 1986 but before that were killed for bounty as they do prey on livestock, sheep especially. The name derives from Maori representing the screech of the bird, "Kee-ah" . Population estimates range from 1,000 to 5,000 individuals, but its widespread distribution at low density prevents accurate estimates. I tried to get a shot of one of the pair I saw with its wings spread as the underwings are a beautiful scarlet with yellow stripes, but I was not quick enough with the clicker:) At least its a change from seagulls, which are all I usually manage to capture :) . . .Panasonic DMC-FZ7 . .
