The Kea (Nestor notabilis), an unusual Parrot species native to alpine forested areas of New Zealand's South Island, often called Clowns of The Mountains. They are approx 18" in length and weigh 1000g. It is thought that some may live to be 50 years old. This one I spotted in the Arthurs Pass area, and he would have had my camera off me given half a chance. They are notorious for their mischief and curiosity often stripping unattended cars of their trimmings, and stealing clothing and other small items. They gained partial protection in 1970 and full protection in 1986 but before that were killed for bounty as they do prey on livestock, sheep especially. The name derives from Maori representing the screech of the bird, "Kee-ah" . Population estimates range from 1,000 to 5,000 individuals, but its widespread distribution at low density prevents accurate estimates. I tried to get a shot of one of the pair I saw with its wings spread as the underwings are a beautiful scarlet with yellow stripes, but I was not quick enough with the clicker:) At least its a change from seagulls, which are all I usually manage to capture :) . . .Panasonic DMC-FZ7 . . Any comments or opinions always welcome and appreciated.

This is not only a fine capture but an extremely interesting narrative as well. Certainly a new bird for me. Never thought of a Parrot as a bird of prey. having said that ... the image is very sharp. The detail has been captured by the camera, however it's somewhat lost in the dark shadow up front. I don't know what editor program you may have. I downloaded this and used Paint Shop Pro X to bring out the more of the birds detail and color using nothing more than "Fill Flash".

Just an old "Grampa" who still has a Kodak "Box" camera kicking around the attic ... learning and enjoying the wonders of modern digital photography.

Interesting little trouble maker. You can see from your image that he does have some really bright colors in those wings of his. He seems to be pondering here how he can get away with that black box you hold. I'm glad you didn't attempt getting closer. I would expect they would have to be in pairs at least to bring down a sheep. A wonderful post, Eve and funny detail about what they are capable of doing. Were they on the endangered species list?

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

Lyn - parrots do live 50 years or more! I know some caged parrots are left in wills as they outlive their owners! Glad to know an endangered fellow such as this one is doing ok in the wild - I've never heard of them... Nice capture... ~Mary~

Did you ask him how old he was? Just wondered. Nice photo and I too am surprised to hear they are birds of prey. I knew a minister that had one that was a bird of pray, but that' s the only one. Good post Lyn.

Wow! What a clear shot - the plumage on this bird is magnificent! The creature looks so attractive, but I had no idea he was such a troublemaker. Interesting too to hear that the underside of the wings is so richly coloured; I don't think I have ever seen this depicted. Good work Lyn!

I love the information you always share with your shots. I've never heard of this bird before. Seeing the two of you wrestle for your camera is what I'm imagining now - glad that didn't happen!
