Lake Wakatipu, Central Otago, New Zealand. Taken with Panasonic DMC-FZ7 during my stay there in March. The lake is over 80km long and its bed is 100m below sea level in places. The water rises and falls approx 10 cm every half hour or so - known as a sieche. In Maori tradition, Lake Wakatipu is the grave of the giant Matau, who abducted a beautiful high-born woman, Manata. She had a suitor named Matakauri, who rescued her and returned to kill the giant, setting fire to the dried fern around him. Matau was suffocated by the smoke and, with flames licking at his side, he drew up his legs. His burning body, with raised knees, formed a distinctive curving chasm that filled with water. His heart continues to beat, causing the regular changes in lake level. Scientists believe it has more to do with atmospheric presssure. Thank you for looking, your comments are very welcome :)
