Many people on first seeing the colours of the rivers and lakes in this area are amazed by the beautiful colour, and often photos are suspected of having been enhanced. This is straight off the camera with no adjustments at all. It is the Pukaki River Canal which flows through three hydroelectric systems towards Lake Benmore in the Mackenzie Basin in Canterbury,South Island, New Zealand. This is taken where it exits Lake Pukaki, where I stopped as I spied some curves :) The turquoise colour is caused by the glacial feed to the lakes which created glacial flour, finely ground rock particles from glaciers. It is an impressive sight when the control gates are fully open. I think it contrasts well with the barren winter brown of the surrounding landscape. . . Shot with Canon EOS 450D. I may do some work on it - I think it needs sharpening a bit, and some sky cropped off. What do you think? Comments most welcome.

Why do the pictures come out square when the lens is round??

Maybe a tad too much sky, but great capture.

Cropping would help. I wish you had backed up a little to get the entire dam in the photo. Also if you had angled it to the right to get water and mountains in the background into a closer view it would be terrific. Giving you lessons is like telling a squirrel how to climb a tree, but at least you ask.

Wonderful location. Really nice contrasting colors and textures. I'm on the fence about taking some sky... one hand I think it adds perspective to size, the other it may show more of the horizon that seems as interesting too. Very informative read too!

Beautiful shot, Lyn. The contrast against the brown ground is striking. I wouldn't crop off part of the sky. My screen is 1280 x 1024 ( 1 x 0.8) and it looks good here although it does not fill my screen. I would suggest cropping the image to suit either a 1 x 0.8 or a 1 x 0.75 screen which are what most people have. A 3000 x 2000 straight from the camera brings out a 1 x 0.66 ( 1 : 2/3) which is not a common screen size. Just a suggestion!

i think it's terrific, too. a 16x9 crop might be worth trying. the water color is incredible. the brown hills make it stand out so well. i see a few curves. too.

You may be right, but it sure doesn't need any color adjustment.

Great shot Lyn. It is great as it is. I might like it cropped the other way, where the damn is gone and you just see the winding river and roads, with the mountain in back. That would not work with present narrative. Of course it is just my humble opinion. I don't pretend to be anywhere the artist you are. Have a good week my friend.

Beautiful water color! If I were to play around with the image, I would leave the sky in, and try cropping a bit off the right side, right past the curve where the railing ends and runs into the end of the dam. Nice photo!

Ahhh so that explains your 'trademark blue'. Maybe it could be a bit sharper, but I'm not sure it detracts. As for cropping, I don't think there's an obvious place to crop. Probably worth playing with though, there are some great shapes in this and it might make a good abstract. I like it as is though - colours work well together and the gentle curves are very nice.

I wouldn't know how to tell you to improve on this one. The color of the canal is so stunning and it stands out nicely there. This one is my personal fav between the two.
