Second of the bin rescue. If anyone can read the inscription and date above the door I would be delighted :)
Again taken with Kodak V550. Thanks for looking. Comments welcome.
My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust
Touching up old photos can be lots of fun. You had a good eye back in 2006 too, Lyn. I love the colors and detail in this one as well. The inscription is Italian, so I can't help, though it does resemble Latin quite closely, but I don't remember much of that.
Hi Lyn. I too tried my hand at translating the inscription but did not get very far. If it is Latin, then I was somewhat able to make out "pity fellowship..." and "crowned with..."
The year, MDCCLXXXI I believe is 1776 (the same date you will find on the base of the pyramid on the Great Seal of the United States).
Many of the inscriptions above doorways of this time had the phrase, in Latin, "paganus ut thee , vestigium meus evangelist" or in Italian, "piselli verso thee , segno mio evangelista." They both mean, "Peace to thee, mark my evangelist" and neither of which I see here. I do see Benedetto's name immediately above the door.
At the top of the incription, D.O.M., means, "Deo Optimo Maximo ("To God, the Best and Greatest").
You must have had a lot of memories rushing back as you looked at these photos in your bin LE. The comments have all been interesting which were triggered by this great photo.
Lyn, I have read John's comment above. To me he's an expert, as he is almost right. The only minor difference is the year. To me M = 1000, D = 500, CC = 2 x100, L = 50, XXX = 3 x 10, I = 1.
They can be added (because there are no major figures preceeded by minor ones: XXI = 21, IXX = 19), so the result to me is 1781.
I can't read a bit of it. However; research so far indicates it is something along these lines. The periods just separate each word of the original language. _______________________________________

It looks to be a dedication of sorts. Purely an amateur transliteration of course. Any one with a little knowledge of Latin and Italian could do better I'm sure. I could not find all of the words in Latin. Two are defined through breaking them apart into their apparent Italian derivatives. (Yes, I do have too much time on my hands.)
I like your subject in this photo LynEve. Both antiquity of the architecture and the unique angle make this a fascinating photo.
