This previous Newspaper Office will re-open as a Bank, and will comply 100% with Earthquake Building regulations. The front facade will be kept. The building did not suffer any obvious damage in the quakes and has only recently been vacated.
Throughout New Zealand there are over 20,000 non-residential 'earthquake-prone' buildings constructed pre 1935 when the regulations first came into practice following the devastating Hawke's Bay earthquake in 1931.
Since the Christchurch quakes of 2010/11 many buildings have been deemed unsafe, and need major work. All commercial building owners have 5 years to have their building assessed and 15 years to complete the work. Of course for many this will be impossible as it is a very costly procedure. Many heritage structures appear normal and undamaged but are standing empty with uncertain futures. Likewise residential housing.
