This is Deborah Bay again where my recent seagull photos were taken.
Had I not crept up on this sleeping gull (yes it is sleeping, not headless, and it flew away before I got any closer) I would not have read the plaque and learned that the pull-off carpark we were on was once a torpedo boat mole built for the Defender-class torpedo boat HMS Taiaroa, which was based here from 1884-92.
Taiaroa was built at Chiswick in 1883 and shipped to New Zealand, where she was assigned to the defence of Port Chalmers. I took a snap of the plaque which you can view HERE. HMS Taiaroa is thought to have been broken up when it became obsolete.
Canon 450D. Comments most welcome :)

Didn't know that in that time there was a Russian threat to New Zealand. A possibility is that, when these history lessons were teached, it has escaped my attention because I probably had other priorities, lol.

Very fine image again, Lyn.

Regards, Cornelius.

From Wikipedia
"Past relations with the Soviet Union and with imperial Russia were often strained. In the nineteenth century the Russian Empire was seen as a threat to the British Empire, of which New Zealand was a loyal member. Coastal fortifications were constructed in the 1870s and 1880s because of the perceived threat"

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Thanks for the info, Lyn. Very interesting. Confirms that I was involved with other things when these history lessons were teached, lol.

Never knew that the Russians were interested to occupy New Zealand Lyn. The seagull is a sign of piece on Torpedo Boat Mole but even they could be a threat as a large group when they start bombing the aggressors.

Lovely water image with a wonderful sky (not to mention the headless, sleeping gull!). The narrative and link are really interesting and informative.
