Colchicum autumnale, known as Autumn Crocus, Naked Lady or Meadow Saffron resembles true crocuses, but blooms in autumn. The Naked Lady name comes from the fact that the flowers appear in Autumn with no leaves. Leaves arrive in late Spring and die off in summer. The Autumn crocus has six stamens while true crocus have three. They are only distantly related.
The corms are deadly poisonous and there is no known antidote. The active ingredient is colchicine, which is used in medicine for the treatment of gout.
This was taken in March with Canon 450D.
