Today we visited Koekohe Beach where the famous Moeraki Boulders are, with our son and his family. It was his birthday and there is a very nice restaurant that serves the best Blue Cod in the world :)

It looks quite a peaceful scene but it was in fact very windy and the stormy sky was a warning of what was to follow - gale force winds resulting in damage and power outages in some areas. Our garden is worse for wear and our barbeque cover has flown away somewhere. We have battened down the hatches for the night as it is still blowing:)
The Moeraki Boulders are concretions created by the cementation of the Paleocene mudstone of the Moeraki Formation, from which they have been exhumed by coastal erosion. The largest boulders are as big as 3 metres in across and weigh several tones. Read more about them here
