Continuing . . from the Te Papa exhibition :Gallipoli:The Scale Of Our War
Centre was Corporal Friday Patrick Hawkins (1891-1968), part of the Maori Contingent machine-gun team on Rhododendron Ridge. When the corporal at the gun was shot dead, (Colin Warden, next to him), Hawkins took over as No. 1 gunner. A bullet through the wrist broke his arm and he was discharged in 1916. When World War II broke out he re-enlisted with the 28th Māori Battalion, arriving in Egypt on 15 May 1941.
On the right - Australian-born engineer Colin Warden (1890-1915)of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, which landed on Gallipoli with the Auckland Infantry Battalion. He was a fearless soldier, a crack sniper and machine gunner. Although only a private, he commanded a 16-man Maori Contingent machine-gun team. On 8 August, they came under heavy fire and Warden was killed.
On the left is Private Rikihana Careek who I have already posted.
I have one more of the 8 featured men which I shall post tomorrow.
