A New Zealand native, the Pukeko (Porphyrio porphyrio melanotus) captured during my recent visit to Queenstown. Pukeko can fly long distances and are also excellent swimmers despite not having webbed feet. Their feet are quite enormous in proportion to the rest of them :) This one was very friendly and followed us around, along with some ducks. Also known as a Swamp Hen.

It looks like a cross between a Muscovy Duck and a Pigeon, LE.
Interesting bird.

Those feet look like the size of the ones we'd see on a 20 LB. turkey over here Lyn - beautiful coloring.

Its big feet perhaps make clear why it doesn't wear shoes, Lyn (no available in this size, ☺ ).
Just kidding of course. Very interesting bird however, captured very well!
