Straight from camera. Not my first pic taken with new camera. Boris was the first model, but kept on moving :) Somehow I cannot get used to this new toy Panasonic Lumix DMC-XS3. Any useful recommendations or advice...? SAM & SAAB

Hey Sam, I like the details of the bud, and the color is good. The building in the background is kind of distracting, but not really a big deal. Just keep trying different settings.I'm not familiar with the camera so really can't offer any suggestions, maybe some one else can. Keep on snapping, and playing, I believe this will be a learning mission for you. :) It sure is nice to see you back on Caedes. sas=^..^=

Hello SAM,

Congrats with your new 'toy'

Like Sandi, I'm not familiar with this camera as well.

I'll give you this link for downloading the Panasonic Lumix DMC-XS3 Advanced Manual. Perhaps it's superfluous, but in other cases it may be helpful to you.

Hugs and best regards, to SAAB as well.

Focus is sharp on the bud but Sandi is right that background is not really ideal SAM. Here is a link which gives helpful info about your camera.

Outstanding detail and clarity in this fabulous close up, you and your new camera are doing a grand job. As Sandi said the background is a little much, I might rework it for fun, downloaded

WOW! This is a great looking 3D shot, SAM. I feel like I could reach out and touch the bud. I love the DOF, too. Excellent shot straight from the camera. I want to get a small camera like that to carry wherever I go. The quality looks to be that of a DSLR. I bet SAAB was delighted when you showed him the picture you took of him.

It all looks a tad blurry to me SAM. Perhaps the wind was blowing and you had some movement on the bud. I get that kind of result with my pocket camera.
Keep shooting and glad you got a camera.

New camera?

:o)

I've always enjoyed reading through dpreview.com's reviews.. as they typically touch on the strong points of any make and/or model and it's best uses.. what it might be best suited for.. for example;

"The 24mm ultra wide angle lens gives photographers a wider range of composition possibilities with approx. 213% larger viewing space compared to that of 35mm camera. It captures more subjects in a limited focusing distance and is good for shooting group portraits, indoor objects or dynamic landscapes. For distant subjects, the Intelligent Zoom can be used for the extended magnification to 10x by combining the digital zoom with minimum deterioration of image quality."

Or.. and on the note of 'creative food for fun'..

"Aspiring photographers can take advantage of a wide array of creative and artistic features. With the Creative Panorama function, it is possible to shoot a horizontal / vertical panoramic image with consequent shots taken by overlaying the previous picture and to put on a filter effect of Retro, Expressive, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Old Days, Cross Process and One Point Colour.

The Creative Control and Creative Retouch features a total of 13 filter effects - Retro, Expressive, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Miniature Effect, Old Days and One Point Colour. The Creative Control lets users shoot with a filter effect while checking how it affects the picture. The Creative Retouch allows users to apply a filter effect on the picture even after shooting in camera - perfect for transforming a shot post-shooting."

That said..

Keep shooting and have fun. :o)

Oh, and nice shot, by the way.

Good good colour and detail.

I cannot add anything new to the above good advice already given but a good first experience with the new equipment and nice to see you posting again.

I think you got nice detail SAM and I recently bought an ultra slim compact myself that I'm still experimenting with - there is a learning curve if you're used to holding a larger camera and of course every focusing button feels different. Stick with it - lots of practice helps.

The camera takes good pictures, clear and good sharpness, but think of the details in the background and how you compose the image. Good picture of the bud.

Can't add much more to what has already been said - just get out in the field and practice and don't be shy about trying out different settings. The more you use your new camera, the more comfortable and confident you will become. Nice sharp shot of the bud btw!!!:-):-):-)!!! Hope to see more postings from you in the near future!!!

Never poke a grizzly bear, or any bear for that matter, that's about the only advice I can think of off the top of my head.

A good not-first shot with your new camera, SAM. Nice details and DoF in the photo and a nice capture of your new bud, of whom we are still awaiting an introduction.

Very nice SAM. The focus on the bud is very good and the depth of field focuses one's attention on the bud, emphasizing the subject of the shot.

Metaphorically your composition is excellent: the branch in the mid-ground seems to form an arc in continuation with the twig that the bud is on, somewhat like saying 'the twig is there, and its a part, but the bud is the subject; then there's this: the bud can be seen to be supported by the tree in the mid-ground - 'This (the bud) is how 'I/we' grow into Spring (In our latitudes (Poland and NY) days of warm sun, cool air, and renewal are here).

If I'm right about how you focused on your subject it looks like a straight on shot of that bud making it appear huge by comparison to the other buds. That could be a clever idea in the future for some other subjects Marzena.
