I took this one at the calgary zoo. Im not fully happy with the way it turned out. The wings arn't sharp all of the way, but i figure it is ok anyways. Im not sure if it was because of my aperature (f/6.3) or the fact that the butterfly would jump every time my flash went off so maybe the preflash got the motion going. Anyways, hope you like it.

Pretty butterfly image! They don't seem to sit still long enough for me to play!

nice shot , and like you said tis a shame about the wings. (6.3f should do but your angle was not quite right - always try to keep your sensor parallel to the subject , like that you can take the most advantage from the tiny dof with closups. )

I do think itis a beautiful shot Milo.
Did you use a macro lens or a zoom?
When I am shooting a photo like this with a macro lens, I would preset the camera to aperature selection and fix it to f20 at least! Then I would select ISO800 to have a decent shutter speeed and have the noise reduction on.

If you can't find the words, you may as well shoot it...

Thank you two for the suggestions. I think it would have been good to combine a bit of what both you have said. Higher iso, smaller aperature, and a more direct angle. Now all i have to do is remember that for next time.

i see what you mean about the wings being out of focus, but i dont think its that bad. i really like the colors in this picture, the deep greens look so perfect with the yellow and black of the butterfly. i really like how the leaf its standing on looks like its floating, it creates a cool mood for me. really great capture, i really enjoyed it! ~abby
