I believe these are Hostas, Michael, grown especially for their wonderful variety of colored leaves and the fact that they do well in shade. They have flowers too, but later in the season. These two toned ones are very pretty and you are right, it makes a lovely pattern. The shost is crisp and clear too.

I have these in my spring garden most years ... not this year..so it is nice to see that someone was able to grow them. I love these natural texture shots for desktop views..excellent job.
love the Hostas, they produce such bright greens in contrast to the white stripping, making for beautiful foliage. too bad their covered somewhat with what looks like grass clippings. great picture.
