Marvelous picture of him in his home, your's is a male nor a female. Here's my Mr. Pileated our daily vistor.
They are the largest woodpecker in North America. Adults (40–49 cm or 19 1/2 inch long, 250–350 g weight) are mainly black with a red crest and a white line down the sides of the throat. They show white on the wings in flight. Adult males have a red line from the bill to the throat, in adult females these are black.
Chad - Door County is a gorgeous region; undoubtedly a beautiful camping location. It appears as though this Pileated Woodpecker looks perturbed that his neighborhood was disturbed, as he peers out the front door of his condo. Your lighting on the bird amidst the shadows, as well as the DOF with bright, blurred green and blue background, make this a very nice photo. Thad
Chad, this is an excellent capture of the ever-elusive pileated woodpecker.
Great composition. The lighting looks delicious, you have great DOF, colors are sharp.
