As the enemies of Valhalla multiplied and grew bold there came a time when Odin could no longer ignore their grievous clamour and so he came down to the barren realms of the earth to build a mighty forge. Therein he wrought all manner of dire weapons and the greatest of these were greed and pride. On the day of war Odin stood alone and when the trumpets of his enemies sounded loud he cast into the midst of the thronging warriors the spear of pride and over their heads he spread the net of greed. His victory assured Odin turned his back on the earth and all her children. So great was the work of his forging there has never again been a time when the children of earth found the unity to contest the Heavens. It is said that Odin's forge still burns hot, waiting perhaps for the day The Father returns to unforge the grim weapons with which he mastered us all. So it is that the wise, on seeing the glow of that forge in the heavens, nurture in their hearts the hope that perhaps even tomorrow the unforging of greed and pride may at last be broached.
