Another space shuttle image from NASA's Earth Observatory website and used within their usage policy. Shanghai, a fantastic city well worth a visit. Actually worth several visits. The city central is that area on the right side with the black line writhing thru it. The large black mass in the top right corner is the Yangtze River, a big chunk of water indeed. There is, even at this distance, a visible difference between traditional Shanghai, which is the radial pattern on the left side of the small black river line, and the recent expansions, which includes Pudong just on the other side of the river, which are all geometric and squared rather than radial. I guess if you are hell bent on development as fast and as cheap as possible then straight lines for roads and infrastructure is the way to go.

Enjoy.

Mikel.

At first I thought it was some drawing, but when I saw the full version, I realized what was it and I liked it very much.
