Leaning back in my kayak allowed me this treat yesterday, quite possibly the last of the nice days up here in the far north (this weekend the kayaks get wrapped for winter). Altocumulus clouds are small mid-level layers or patches of clouds, called cloudlets, which most commonly exist in the shape of rounded clumps, ranging from 7,000 to 18,000 feet above us. There are many varieties of altocumulus, however, meaning they can appear in a range of shapes. Altocumulus are made up of a mix of ice and water, giving them a slightly more ethereal appearance than the big and fluffy lower level cumulus. Precipitation from these clouds is rare, but even if rain does fall it doesn't reach the ground, so you can still have your fall picnic... just bring a sweater.
'Nik', thanks for this very 'tasty' image, although the marshmallows aren't edible and only can be 'consumed' visibly, 😁 !
Thanks too for your educational narrative, teaching us about some meteorologic phenomena and your advice not to forget a sweater when picnicking in the Fall under such a sky.
