'Punks',,,it's what we called them as children. They were cut, dried and then lite at night (it would burn slowly like a cigar) and used to keep the bugs away. Not sure if it really worked or if it's still being done today, but it was fun back then.

Well, I've heard of punks and used them, but I thought they were man made. I've never used one that started life as a cattail, but you've got me curious now :)

I've used punks that were man made, they were on a stick and burned slowly. We used to dip these in kerosine and use them as torches. Nice shot by the way.

This is a really pretty image - so well composed, and the colours are beautiful.
Punks :) - a new one on me, I think they are bullrushes?

I've never heard of them referred to as 'punks' before. But we used to do the same thing years back. Very nice photo, great detail and lighting.

Gorgeous!! I love them too. Cattails we call them. They are edible even. They can be dried and ground into flour. So much in nature that we learn. I never knew about lighting them and using them to ward off bugs. Nice idea too. Nice photo, lovely colour. Verena
