NOTICE: THIS IMAGE IS COPYRIGHTED AND NOT TO BE POSTED ON ANY OTHER WEBSITE. Well, I was going to buy a Canon 7D with it's 8fps rapid fire for shooting in-flight birds but then I sat down with the manual to my Canon 50D with it's 6fps (not bad), made some changes to the settings for bird captures, made C1 my bird capture mode (Canon lingo) and wallah...I have about 5 more of these that I think are better than this one. Do I need a 7D or not? Still not perfect but I'll get there with practice. Smoke in the background is a grass fire. I honked my horn to get duckie to take flight. I believer that is a Northern Shoveler duck. What? I don't know why he is this far south. Ask the duck! How do ya like the beak on that boy?

I checked the data info on this and see that I shot him at 100mm with a Canon 100-400mm. This is a push/pull lens for telephoto which does not make it quick for zooming. I am disappointed that I didn't stretch out the lens. No wonder it looks far away. Like I said, I need practice. RATS!

Hi Pat - The rapid firing certainly enabled you to capture a sharp image of the mallard! great shot! I might be inclined to crop the photograph a little to enable the viewer to see more of the bird and less of the landscape! I cannot advise you on the cameras as I do not have experience of the 7D, but I can see that you got a good result with your 50D.

Your fiddling around with the settings has brought out a very nice and sharp image. No motion to be seen at all - almost as if the duck was hung on a string with the wings opened up :0) Very well done Pat! Yeah, the beak is big and sharp and has a fashion colour too.

Pat ... nice stop action on the duck & you are correct it takes alot of practice in getting that perfect shot when it comes to birds in action / motion. I noticed immediately how long the duck's beak is. I started out with fine tuning my settings at a distance (like this one) & then when I zoomed in closer or was able to get closer to my subject I'd adjust my settings slightly with fairly good results ... both shutter speed & exposure. All I can say is practice, practice, practice ... and have lots of fun in the process. Wonderful shot & looking forward to more.

It doesn't look like me at all Owd Momma. With all the snow this year I am the true Northern Shoveler. I can't get that high off the ground anymore unless there is a goose involved.

No you don't need a 7D. This is fabulous. Fowl Play is needing a centerfold for April. I will be watching your ducks take flight.

Pat, You did a great job with the Canon you have. I remember you telling me it is more the lens than anything else. You have a collection of canons that have all brought you great shots. Stick with this one and experiment. Maybe some cropping would have done it better, but I do like the smoke from the grass fires in this as well. =^..^=sandi

Keep practicing with the 50D, I was going to go for the 7D, but I don't see the reason for the upgrade. This is a good capture, ducks are pretty fast and hard to get decent focus. You done good Momma.
