Need to view this full screen. The big, black eastern lubber grasshopper has started making its appearance in southern Louisiana. These grasshoppers, also known as Devil’s horses, can reach 4 inches in length and are the largest grasshoppers in the United States. Although harmless to people, the lubber can cause birds and mammals to vomit violently if they eat it. Lubbers also secrete a foamy spray, accompanied by loud hissing when handled. They will regurgitate recently-consumed plant material as a dark brown liquid, commonly called "tobacco spit," which can stain clothing. I know you just can't wait to pick one up.

I seen these so thick one year that they made a concrete road look like Black Top. There was a continuous Crunching Sound as you drove over them.

HERE IS AN IMAGE OF ONE I POSTED SOMETIME BACK.

I was going to say the orange stripes on this critter's body are kind of pretty, but after reading what you wrote I'm just gonna say, I'm glad we don't have such a beastie up here in the North!
