This type of lily is popular in the Midwest. It comes up lush and green in the spring but when the summer heats hits, it dies down. Then sometime in mid-summer, a stalk comes up seemingly overnight out of the bare ground. The surprise lily is a member of the Amaryllis family of flowers.
