At the camp that I run, there are MANY trails in the region. We decided to try a new to us trail in Big South Fork this year. It featured Slave Falls and Needle Arch. We found Slave Falls without problems but after that the maps we had and the topography didn't match up. We hiked down one trail for quite a ways along a stream valley. I called a halt because my internal compass was saying we were going to Twin Arches which was in the opposite direction (later I found out that I was correct). We went back and took a different fork. It ended up going up the valley on the other side, so we turned around again. By this time it was getting late, so we returned to camp. Never did see Needle Arch. Perhaps next year. The kids give out "Awards" on the last day of camp. This was mine. (big grin)

Jeff, I've read your narrative and have come to the conclusion that in my early career it was easier to find the way at sea to a destination rather easier than what you've experienced on your adventurous hikes. If I had taken part in such hikes, I would probably still be lost, 😁 .
Very nice and appropriate award.
