The vertical really gives it a sense of height and width.

A beautiful photo! It's hard to go wrong with a shot of Venice. I love the placid canal and the gently rippled reflections. You've placed the perspective's vanishing point a little right of center and a touch lower than center too which helps avoid a mechanically geometrical look and keeps the scene appearing natural. The balcony with foliage adds an attractive element of interest to the foreground. Then further back the blue-covered boat keeps the interest going. The background of course, where the canal squinches away makes the background interesting. Altogether a great composition!
