At a geyser at Yellowstone National Park. The sunlight hitting the steam made a great effect.

I have always decried the method of voting in the c-index because we are forced to vote on an image without knowing any information about it. This shot is a perfect case in point. Members seeing it in the voting booth might think it's simply an over-exposed washed out photo and give it low marks so, three things occur to me: 1) ignore any c-index rating on this one. It most likely won't be accurate. Concentrate instead on the comments you get. 2) When photographing a unique natural event like this, you need to place it in proper context. By pulling back from the subject matter so that more of the surrounding landscape is visible, it would allow viewers to understand more clearly what is going on here. As it is, there's too much white steam in the photo to illustrate that. Even so, it's great that you understood how unusual the scene was and thought to capture it. 3) Whenever I find myself in a situation like this, I will take up to a dozen photos of the scene from as many angles and focal lengths as I can, terrain allowing, and then pick out the best one later when I'm viewing them on the monitor. With the advent of digital cameras, film and processing costs are no longer an issue and our media is reusable. We are only limited by the number of cards we take along with us. Using a 6 megapixel camera, I usually take enough cards to equal 4 to 8 GB of space so I can shoot like there's no tomorrow. Perhaps another opportunity like this scene will present itself to you sometime.
