I like Doug's comment. However, he reminds me more of my first wife who used to sleep through sex.
Since the owl is a nocturnal hunter, he was probably getting very tired with you bothering him when he would have been sleeping. When I go to a zoo and the animals aren't cooperating, I make sure I bring along a pocketful of gravel. :-)
