Elbe 3 used to be light vessel (a small ship with a beacon on it) on the river Elbe. Light vessels are placed at important points of navigation where it is difficult to build a lighthouse. They are becoming obsolete and are now-a-days replaced by automated buoys that send out racon beams (signals for identification on radar).

I see that the 'Elbe 3' still is in a very good condition. I really hope that the maintenance schedule (probably done by volunteers) can be continued for a long, long while, because it's a part of the 'maritime heritage'.

Thanks, Captain. I am so happy to have you both seamen here together - yourself and C. And me too - a seaman of a kind as I have been sailing within 20 years at least several hundreds of times - every time on the Baltic [sea trials of newbuilding ships] only but once made a trip to USA - stopping in Antwerp - on a bulk carrier flying a Finnish flag - hence my family name... Plus sailed several times from Hamburg to the sea on guest trips. HOWGH.
