I don't know why the lower part of the beak is longer - probably to use as a spoon or shovel to pick up the prey from water.

People are like cameras--sometimes they lose focus.

Raj, in your narrative and the next comments I saw many options to explain the reason for this snapped off beak. I don't know which is the right one. This also doesn't matter, because your goal was to provide us with a suitable photo for Manic Monday M(²), and you did an excellent job in doing this.
