Chess originated from India but propagated through the world by the Persians (Iranians). In fact, the equivalent of the word "Chess" in all Indo-European groups of languages ,e.g. English, French, German, Spanish, Italian...(all branches of Sanskrit), is a derivative of the Persian word "Shah-Maat" meaning checkmate. Thus, "Chess", "Echec", "Schachi", "Ajedrez" ....and even "Shakhmaati" (Russian) are all modified forms of "Shah-Maat". Ironically, and interestingly, the word "Chess" in Persian is "Shatranj", a derivative of the original Sanskrit "Chatooranka". The word "Shah-Maat" is used only in its original meaning i.e. Checkmate (=Demise of the Shah) which is what I have tried to portray in this shot.

Wow! Very interesting word history! Great macro shot, I like how it looks like the knight is swallowing the king. Well done!

Allthough i play chess for years now, a lot of your narative above was not known to me. The angle of the image is nicely choosen, and the unsharp horse adds to the shot, as does the overal reddish color. Thanks for the info and the posting !

Thanks for the history lesson and the innovative approach. I like the way the knight frames the "dead shah".

When you're through with life and all hope is lost. Hold out your hand 'cos friends will be friends - right till the end.
